This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. One of the quotes on the back cover says ‘rare’ and I’d have to agree. This is the story of Johnny Merrimon and his attempts to find his long ago abducted twin sister. It has action and adventure in abundance but also moments of poignance that give the book a gravitas that is genuinely rare.

There was one hugely minor event in the plot that left me a bit confused but this book has superb characters, believable plot, gripping story, loads of action, suspense, bravery, courage and more. in ‘The Last Child’, John Hart has managed to wrap it all into 458 brilliant pages.

9.5/10 – Absolutely loved this book.

A really easy read that kept me up late to find out what happens next.

8.5/10 Robert Goddard writes ‘Long Time Coming’ with a simplicity that I really enjoyed and I’d highly recommend it.

This one doesn’t stuck in my head as being a really great read but it moved along at a respectable pace and quite easily allowed the reader to slot into the role of Tim Blake the lead character. There were a few too many fantastic coincidences for my liking but they created a finely woven plot and an entertaining story.

Tim Blake’s daughter is supposed to be working at a local hotel but goes missing and has never been heard of by her supposed employers.

I like him on the whole and love the genre but haven’t read some of his in the past which I wasn’t overly impressed by. This was good fun though. Special forces nutcase Nick Stone gets roped into a robbery which turns out not to be the smoothest of jobs. Adventure ensues with loads of guns and daring mentalness along the way.

Andy McNab writes some of the easiest to read and engrossing action novels around. Kind of like a good Hollywood action adventure – minimal thought required and very entertaining.

8/10 – nothing new but great fun.

And to be honest, if I had read the cover better, I propobably wouldn’t have decided to buy it. Supernatural ‘aint my thing. Or so I thought.

This was a great read. Lots of suspense and plenty of action to keep you on edge. I’ve left it far too long to write a review so the details are a little hazy but suffice to say I’ll be buying more of Stephen Leather’s work. Thoroughly enjoyable even though it includes devils and witchcraft and other nonsense!

7.5/10 – I docked a bit because of the sheer ridiculousness of it but a bloody good read!

Enjoyed a fantastic weekend away with friends celebrating one of their birthdays. It was a real blowout at the Black Horse Inn in Maidstone. The place is great with a fantastic atmosphere. I’d been there before but only many years back and it’s changed a lot. They’ve built a dedicated hotel in a chalet style which provided very comfortable accomadation.

It wasn’t just the place that was good though. Two of our group were chefs and one was a customer service manager and we all agreed that both the food and the customer service was really excellent. The evening meal was top notch as was the breakfast and the staff were friendly, curteous, respectful and kind. Considering how ill I felt the following morning (drinking until 3.30am will do that) they were surprisingly pleasant company!

Knowing how to treat your customers is key to making a great experience and they really had a good idea of how to achienve this. We left feeling slightly ill but very, very happy with the experience. I’d recommend it!

Lee Child writes a bloody good book and 61 hours is no exception. I read Child’s debut Reacher novel when it was first released and unlike many authors he hasn’t lost any of his intrigue. As far as plot’s concerned, you never know what to expect. It’s such a brilliant concept; an ex military policeman who roams across the US. Military adds the knowledge of guns, battle scars and general expertise reserved for special forces novels. Policeman adds the detective skills, inner city combat knowledge and authenticity in his desire to help others. Roaming means the backdrop for each adventure could be anywhere with anyone doing anything. And of course, he’s an ex military policeman because he was a maverick. He’s the modern day lone good-guy, gun slinger discovering the wild west.

It was a long time ago but I remember being marginally disappointed with one of the Reacher novels so I’m pleased to say the same isn’t the case with 61 hours. In typical style, the action kicks off pretty early and there’s only one man capable of saving the day. An entire police force is lamentable in comparison to Jack Reacher.

The story is based around a small town in South Dakota where by a twist of fate, Reacher ends up stranded. A local gang of bikers are causing serious problems and the police are out of their depth in trying to ensure the safety of the town and it’s citizens. Step up Reacher. Advise, investigate, battle, survive. No problem. Brilliant.

Now, having just heaped praise on the booko, there are three words at the end which fill me with hate:

TO BE CONTINUED

For me, normally, this is incredibly annoying. Books aren’t like TV shows where you only have to wait a week to find out what happens; by the time the next book’s released I’ll have completely forgotten the context and I probably won’t be able to find the first book to refresh my memory. However, In fairness to Child, the book is completely self contained with the story having a very definite end. Except for one thing. I’ll let you discover what for yourselves but this left a mildly bitter after taste for me. Shame.

7.5/10 – would have been higher were it not for the ‘to be continued’.

Stuart Neville’s The Twelve is a cracking debut novel. If Neville can come up with more stories like this then he’s going to be a very successful novelist. You can probably guess but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. From the original plot to the believable characters I was gripped right to the end.

The story focuses on Gerry Fegan, a former hit man in the politically torn Northern Ireland. His past life has had a taken its toll on him and he now suffers from an alcohol fuelled desire to right the wrongs he’s commited. To make matters easier for him, he’s tormented by the ghosts of his victims past.

Set in Northern Ireland you expect more political input but it really just serves to provide the perfect backdrop for Gerry’s actions.

The Twelve is an unusual plot. Stuart Neville could have got it horribly wrong and very, very easily slipped into the realms of farcical but he didn’t. He cleverly lets the reader interpret Gerry’s mental state and this makes for a thoroughly believable, intriguing and gripping, violence infested page turner.

There were a couple of supremely minor points towards the end of the book which I think could have been left out but nothing to detract from the overall positive experience.

9/10 – this was a cracking read and I look forward to Neville’s next novel.

I thought this was a so-so read. Definitely not great but also didn’t make me give up on it. I like the fact it was easy to follow with not too many characters introduced and a simple effective plot but there was nothing about it that really stood out. It was a somewhat clichéd story line written in an engaging but basically pedestrian style. I’d buy Matt Hilton’s books again and feel the money was well spent but I wouldn’t expect much from it.

All in all, a worth-reading action adventure but nothing to inspire. Not exactly a page turner.

6/10 – fun but nothing special.
